Niagra Falls

Geologists estimate the Falls are 10,000 to 30,000 years old. About 12,000 years ago, the Falls were seven miles down river at Lewiston/Queenston. The Falls have eroded through the years, sometimes as much as six feet per year, to their present site. The American Falls are 180 feet high, its brink is 1,100 feet long. The Canadian Horseshoe Falls are 170 feet high, its brink measures 2,500 feet. The water that flows over Niagara Falls comes from four of the five Great Lakes. From here, the water goes down the Niagara River to Lake Ontario, then to the Saint Lawrence River and finally, to the Atlantic Ocean. The amount of water flowing in the Niagara River is 1,400 gallons per second.
